Visceral Manipulation is a manual therapy developed by French Osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral. It uses specific and gentle touch to stimulate regular tone, mobility, and inherent tissue motion of the viscera. This technique reorganizes the internal organs effecting the connective tissue attachments and interfaces between the organs and the body as a whole.
Many different things can cause tissue to lose its normal motion. Inflammation, disease, physical trauma, diet, environmental toxins, repetitious movements, and emotional stress are some possible factors. When tissue loses its normal motion, it loses its vitality. The viscera is in the core of the body and when vitality is obstructed there, related manifestations can appear in the periphery.
Torrey weaves visceral manipulation practice into her Rolfing® technique. These two modalities of healing very much complement one another.
